Edizioni Mondadori

The publishing house of Mondadori remains Italy's leading publisher with a wide-ranging and varied production that covers all segments of the market. Prestige and high quality series such as I Meridiani and SIS (Scrittori Italiani e Stranieri), combine with a variety of series to meet the needs of a broad base of readers, such as Strade Blu that has an innovative approach to fiction and non-fiction publishing.
In paperbacks, in particular the Oscar series, which since 1965 has been a symbol in Italy for low-price paperbacks, characterised by an ongoing turnover thanks to a catalogue which now features well over 4,000 titles that are re-published over the years with different designs in different series, including Contemporanea and Spiritualità, dedicated to literary fiction and the leading exponents of western and easter thought respectively, and a new line of quality paperbacks, the Grandi Bestsellers.

Two new titles published in 2009 met with extraordinary success, the first was the new novel by Dan Brown, Il simbolo perduto, wich in just over two months sold over a million copies. There was also great commercial success for the latest novel by Fabio Volo, whose Il tempo che vorrei sold over 600,000 copies in just over a month.
Of particular note was the award of the Premio Campiello to Margaret Mazzantini for Venuto al mondo. The novel, published in November 2008, sold a total of 500,000 copies in 2009. In Italian fiction, there was an excellent response to the first novel by Daria Bignardi, Non vi lascerò orfani, which sold over 100,000 copies. And there was no end to the exceptional advance of Paolo Giordano's La solitudine dei numeri primi which, two years after its publication, has sold over 1,300,000 copies and been translated into more than 30 languages.

In foreign fiction there were significant confirmations for some of the company's historical authors, in addition to the abovementioned Dan Brown, the novels by Carlos Ruiz Zafón Marina, John Grisham Il ricatto, Sophie Kinsella La ragazza fantasma and Patricia Cornwell Kay Scarpetta, all achieved excellent sales of between 150,000 and 350,000 copies.

New titles in non-fiction included Donne di cuori, by Bruno Vespa, which sold more than 300,000 copies and was the top selling non-fiction title of the year. Also of note were the sales of books by two authors historically linked to the company, Corrado Augias and Vito Mancuso, with Disputa su Dio e dintorni, reached sales of 150,000.
The Strade Blu series also recorded important results, in particular with Roberto Saviano, who in 2009 saw sales of more than 2 million for Gomorra and 300,000 for La bellezza e l'inferno. On the non-fiction side Strade Blu saw sales of more than 100,000 for Mario Calabresi's La fortuna non esiste and 60,000 of Slow Economy by Federico Rampini.

In children's books there was an excellent response to the arrival of two new titles in La ragazza drago and Leggende del mondo emerso saga series by Licia Troisi; in the publishing under license area there was success for the product lines linked to L'era Glaciale 3 with sales of 120,000 copies and I Gormiti with sales of over 150,000 copies.
